Your Tone Decides the Outcome of a Conversation

We have all heard it a thousand times “change your tone,” “your tone is not appreciated,” “don’t take that tone with me.” What does this mean?

Tone refers to the variation in your voice. There are several factors that go into the Tone of your voice:

  • Pitch – this is the depth or height of your sound.

  • Pace – this is the speed of which you speak.

  • Volume – this is how soft or loud you are when you speak.

  • Inflection – this is the rhythm of up and down of your voice.

  • Emphasis – this is where you may stress or put importance on a certain word.

The tone is very important because depending on which tone you use, depends on the reaction you are going to get from someone. You could be asking a very simple question such as “what time will you be in today” and depending on the tone this could come across in a negative way or positive way.

If you have a flat tone or even tone, it could mean that you are not happy they will be late for work. If you use a higher pitch without emphasis, then you are just asking a simple question.

So before you ask, that simple question take just a few minutes to make sure you use the correct tone, and you will get the appropriate response to your question.
