Supporting Multiple Executives

Supporting more than one executive is becoming the norm anymore. If you have never worked for more than one person, this could be a bit overwhelming.

Here are a few things to help you in working with multiples:

  • Keep a detailed calendar – this will help you when you are going through your to-do list each day. You will know what you need to tend to for both executives. Make sure their calendars are very detailed as well. I copy everything from their calendars onto mine, so I have everything readily available.

  • Remain calm – if you feel caught in the middle or feel as though you are being pushed stop and “just breathe” for a moment. After you take a breath, look at the situation and evaluate the request.

  • Get to know – it is important that you spend some time listening to your executives. This will help you know how each of them work, each of their personalities, what they like and don’t like, etc. You will be able to handle and shift priorities based on how each of them works.

  • Main executive – know which one is the primary executive, this would be the one that takes up most of your time. They are also the ones that will dictate your work and what they need will help you schedule your priorities as theirs obviously will come first.

  • Stay positive – you may feel defeated if both executives are pushing their agenda as a priority. Don’t take this personally as it is not a reflection on you. Just remain positive.

These are just a few tips to help you out a bit. The keys are always to remain calm, stay positive and “just breathe” and the rest will fall into place.
