Delegating Tasks is Hard

Delegating is hard for most administrative professionals. It is our nature just to take on all and do all to make sure it gets done. The problem with this is that we find ourselves taking on small tasks we could let others do so we could concentrate on the more important items.

Here are some excuses that we tell ourselves on why we won’t delegate:

  • “It is easier if I just do it instead of explaining to someone else.” To grow into a C-Level assistant, you need to teach others on your team. This is how you help those that you manage.

  • “I can get it done much faster.” The reason you can get it done quicker is that you have been doing this task for years. It is time to train someone else so that you can move on to another task.

  • “Someone else will get the credit.” Both you and the person doing the task will get the credit. You will praise your colleague for a job well done, and you will be praised for effectively managing a team. A win for both.

  • “I won’t have control of the task.” When delegating a task sit with that person and let them know what you fully expect. Stay in constant contact with that person so if any issues, questions, etc. can be handled promptly.

  • “I am not comfortable delegating the tasks.” If you are not comfortable yet with the person, then start with small tasks until they prove they can handle a much larger task.

It is up to you to train and mentor your colleagues so they can take some of the tasks off your plate. You are showing your executive that you are building a successful team as well you are learning to be a manager of a team.
