There are numerous articles, blogs, magazines and even website pages that talk about how procrastination is bad- it means you are lazy, disorganized, unprofessional or just careless. Unfortunately, you just can’t help yourself. As much as it is not cool to be unreliable, it is sometimes okay and even normal to procrastinate. We cannot do every single task right this minute. There are those items and events that are more important than others and some are more urgent than others.
Procrastination becomes a problem when it is not used in a productive way or when it becomes a form of escape. Life does not stop because you procrastinate. Here are tips on how to make procrastination work for you:
Start small
Most important projects can sometimes be overwhelming and scary to handle. Instead of handling the big project as a whole, you can start small and work up to the larger tasks. Do not let the magnitude of the project to scare you into procrastinating the entire project. You can also work with other people to do the project and make it less overwhelming.
Set boundaries
You can set boundaries that will enable you to the things that you are procrastinating. For example, you can set aside time to do the most important things and then do the other things that are not so important at a later time. This way, you will have time to handle the major issues that require your attention first.
Increase your commitment
A huge number of procrastinators tend to reduce their commitments thinking that with the fewer things to do, they will actually do more. This makes it harder for them to differentiate between important and unimportant tasks. This means that they will end up doing very little. Therefore, to ensure that you avoid procrastination, you should increase your commitment to do important things first.
Adjust your to-do list
When you feel overwhelmed by certain tasks, try to adjust your to-do list instead of procrastinating. For example, if you have urgent deadlines that you can put off until a later time, you can add other tasks to the top of the list. When doing these other tasks, you will find the energy to do the urgent tasks as well. Just make sure that you do each and every task and complete it on time.
Procrastination becomes a problem when you decide to approach everything with the same attitude regardless of the type of quality or input required for that particular situation. Your life does not stop simply because you procrastinate.
