Success May Not Happen On the First Try but Why Would You Stop Trying

We all agree that success is not something that happens overnight or on the first try. It requires a lot of hard work, persistence and other aspects that will enable you to achieve a particular goal. Popular culture has one strong message to everyone who is engaged in self-change: do not give up and never stop trying. No matter what adversity you encounter along the way, you only have one option: just keep on going.

A good number of people argue that in the pursuit of success quitting should never be considered. However, there are instances that call for giving up. But why would you stop trying? In some cases, giving up will be similar to admitting to the following:

  • That you cannot do everything

  • That you are not perfect

  • That there are some goals that are out of your reach

Well, this is very true. Once in a while, we tend to set goals for ourselves that cannot be achieved no matter how hard we try. It is not easy to admit that you are unable to achieve something but sometimes it requires a double take or a good advice from a close friend for us to come to a realization that indeed we are unable to achieve what we thought we could in the first place.

In other instances, feedback from the goal we are pursuing is the only answer for you to learn that undeniably that specific goal is out of reach. You might be so determined to do something and achieve success, but every time you try doing that thing you get frustrated.

Distribution of effort is something you must consider when achieving a specific goal seems impossible. For example, a goal can be achieved only if you give up doing certain things, for instance, certain hobbies, a relationship or even friends. However, this depends on how much you want that particular goal and what you are willing to let go of for you to achieve your goal. In such a situation you need to decide what you need and what is important.

How will you know that it is time to give up?

  • When you have been in a plateau position for a very long time and not making any considerable progress

  • When you realize that you will have to give up other important aspects of your life just to focus on that one specific goal

  • When other people tell you to stop trying so hard, probably because they care about you and they are concerned for you.

One thing is for sure, even if you give up and stop trying on that particular goal, chances are that you have made significant progress and you have learned a lot in the process.
