Always remember what the word assume means and assuming does not still get you the right answer and outcome
We all make assumptions in life about anything including at work and in our personal relationships. Assuming is taking to be the case or to be true; accepting without verification or proof. It is a trait inevitable among people. Firstly, we all know that assuming is a bad idea. Management advisers are very cautious when it comes to assumptions, and they will relentlessly remind us that assumptions are costly. The truth is that assumptions are not very productive; they can ultimately lead to negative emotions, pain, and strife that one can avoid. However, to make things fit within our boundaries, often we fill the blank by making assumptions. We make guesses, predict what may happen and what people will do or even say. Assuming has both demerits and merits:
Cause confusion and delays
Assuming situations causes trouble as well as delays. It is a waste of time having to elaborate where someone has made a wrong assumption. All that time could be used to achieve more productive work.
Causes ill feelings
Additionally, assuming can cause ill feelings at work. If you have the habit of constantly completing other people’s statements or drawing conclusions about their opinions, then the dynamic at work is affected. Nevertheless, your colleagues at work will put a halt to having you in their meetings and brainstorming sessions because you do not pay attention.
“Don’t assume” frightens
Assuming assumes an advantage edge as by advising someone “never assume” or “just stop assuming” may mentally freeze people from an essential segment of decision-making. It may render one into inaction state until all the information is available.
Realistically, making assumptions is significant in our daily lives and careers. Eventually, being aware of assumptions we make daily is critical:
Trigger a sense of reality
Making decisions based on assumptions that are wrong or correct, expose you to risk of an unknown future. For instance, when you walk into a restaurant and order a meal that you assume that you will enjoy, but it fails to meet your expectations. Also, you may believe that your research project that you have worked on with zeal does not meet the supervisor's expectations.
We can avoid making assumptions by paying full attention to other people and the unfolding in our daily lives. We all need to be patient bearing in mind that peoples' ideas are equally important, learn to learn carefully, do not interrupt while a speaker, wait for clarifications and learn to pause and engage in some reflections.
Conclusively, in a real inherent world, making assumptions is both significant and unavoidable. For instance, most of us run errands based on the assumption that we will be alive for another day. We also save, plan and exercise based on the assumption that we will be alive in the future.
Assuming does not always get the right answer and outcome.
