ROMAINE LETTUCE VS. ICEBERG LETTUCE WHY ONE IS BETTER FOR YOU THAN THE OTHER.

The lettuce plant is an ancient Egyptian originated food, which was first converted from weed to being consumed as food for its soft and succulent leaves and the oil produced from its seed. Lettuce grows in different shapes, sizes, and colors; it is an annual plant with the scientific name as Lactuca sativa. There are various kinds of lettuce plants with their different features, but we will be looking at the Romaine lettuce and the Iceberg lettuce to know which is better.

Romaine lettuce:

The name of the Romaine lettuce depicts it as the lettuce plants that have always been cultivated in the Roman gardens; and the Lettuce name was derived from the Latin word Lactuca which means milk, mostly because of the milk that is contained in its succulent leaves. This lettuce is resilient to high temperature.

The Romaine lettuce has an oblong structure which has firm leaf support and tough textured leaves. It has darker and longer leaves with a deep bitter taste.

The popular consumption of lettuce has attracted multiple scientific studies on the different kinds, and it has been discovered that the Romaine lettuce proves to be an incredible source of vitamin K which it has as one of its most abundant nutrients.It also stores vitamin A in form of carotenoids, molybdenum, and folate with good folic acid. In the study of the nutritional contents of the Romaine lettuce, shows that it is a very good source of fiber, many vitamin B compounds including B1, B2, and B6 with good quantities of vitamin C, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and many other food metal nutrients.

The combination of all of its nutritional contents makes it to be a very good antioxidant which is completely beneficial to health as food that helps the body to fight infections and antibodies. Other health benefits include;

Iceberg lettuce:

This lettuce has greenish colored leaves on the outside and whiter and more succulent leaves on the inside, they in a class of lettuce called Crisphead lettuce because of the crisp texture which has a watery blend and a mild taste which they have. Iceberg lettuce is one of the most popular kinds of lettuce used for vegetable salads due to its crunchy feel and good taste that blends well with every other salad ingredient.

Iceberg lettuce has fewer element contents when compared with most vegetables, but it is a rich source to get potassium, iron, manganese, phosphorous, calcium, and magnesium in larger quantities; while it contains thiamine, sodium, folate, copper, and zinc in lesser quantities. It is also very rich in vitamin contents which include vitamin A, B6, C, and K.

The health benefits accrued to the Iceberg lettuce include the following:

  • The folate present in the Iceberg lettuce help in preventing child birth defects.

To summarize, we can deduce that when the Romaine lettuce is placed side by side with the Iceberg lettuce in comparison, the Romaine lettuce proves to be better in herbal functions and as such is preferred for healthy consumption.
